July 31st, 2007

According to the recent researches, hyperactive kids have, as a rule, higher I.Q., than other children. And it appears very often that a child unable to stay with the textbook in hands for more than 10 minutes, learn by heart the whole poem for this short period of time.
These children have also rare ability to express their feelings and to control themselves by means of movement. Frequently they become the gifted actors, dancers or sportsmen.
It is considered, that hyperactivity was observed at a number of well-known people of the past, including Mozart, Alexander the Great, Abraham Lincoln, Bernard Show, Alexander Pushkin, Dostoevsky, Newton, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Pablo Picasso and Salvador Dali. The list of successful people can be continued up to today: they are, for example, Henry Ford, WAlt Disney and David Nilman, the founder of the company «JetBlue Airways».

Contraindications and side effects from the flu vaccination

July 30th, 2007

There are several categories which should not get a flu shot: people who are severely allergic to eggs and subproducts, kids under 6 months, anyone who has ever had reaction to a flu vaccination, ill people with a fever
For your information: the vaccine contains killed flu viruses that will not cause the desease, but will prepare the body to keep off infection.
Even if you, your child or anyone from your family have gotten the vaccine last year, it won’t protect you from getting the flu this year because the protection can not last for such a long time and viruses constantly change. That’s why the vaccine is changed (updated) each year to include the current strains of the virus.
Vaccine prevents infection with only a few of the viruses that can cause similar symptoms, so it doesn’t guarantee against getting sick. Everyone can get flu, but if you are vaccinated, symptoms usually are fewer and milder.
Most people do not experience any side effects from the vaccine and it causes serious harm seldom. Possible side effects include soreness or swelling at the site of the injection or such side effects as headache or low fever.
If your kid does have some symptoms after getting the flu vaccine, put a warm compress on the injection area to ease soreness or swelling, and give ibuprofen for headache or fever. But do not give your child aspirin unless your doctor instructs you to do so.

Flu vaccination

July 26th, 2007

Flu season begins in November and lasts through April, most cases occurs between end of December and beginning of March. Vaccine is usually offered in September till mid-November, but may also be given at any other time of the year.
Vaccination before the flu season gives an organism the chance to build up immunity, or protection from, the virus. The earlier you will done, the better. However, some doctors recommend to get protection even when there are only 2 or 3 months left in the flu season.
In the USA exists the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) which often recommends that certain high-risk groups would be given priority when supplies of the flu vaccine are limited.
Another option is the nasal mist vaccine, which came on the market in 2003 and is now approved for use from 5 to 49 years. But this option is not good for everyone and can’t be used among the kids and adults from high-risk groups.

Improper firearms-storage and kids in the house (Part 2)

July 24th, 2007

No matter have you gun or not, if you live in the USA guns are true danger to your kids, as they are in more than one third of all U.S. families. Kids could face a gun visiting your neighbor’s house, playing with friends, or spending time with extended family.
If you have firearms or other ammunition in your home, always make sure they are kept in a securely locked safe or cabinet out of sight and out of kids’ reach. This concerns all firearms — unloaded and uncocked (you can also use gun locks). Make sure that bullets and shells are stored separately from firearms; gun-cleaning supplies, which are often poisonous, are kept in a safe place.
In case kids faced a gun, these potentially lifesaving rules from the National Rifle Association will help you to teach him or her:
Stop.
Don’t touch.
Remove yourself from the area immediately.
Tell an adult right away.
Emphasize to children that guns are not toys, but deadly weapons. And, unlike scenes in cartoons, real guns can seriously injure or even kill.

Improper firearms-storage and kids in the house (Part 1)

July 23rd, 2007

A new study of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) states that improper firearms-storage is practiced by many parents who have guns. Such behavior put kids at serious risk of inadvertent injuries and suicide, claims the same study.
3,745 parents took part at the research, conducted in 45 states, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Almost a quarter of them said they have firearms. But only a third from them said they store the guns safely — with the weapons locked or away from the house and the bullets locked up and stored in the other place.
The study also revealed that:
- parents of toddlers and preschoolers, that is the age from 2 to 5, store their guns more safely than those who have older kids;
- many parents were likely to use gun locks, but were also more inclined to keep their guns loaded;
- parents with guns often said they keep their ammunition and firearms separate, but store guns just in a hidden place, but not in locked one.
It is interesting that these families were mostly white, lived in rural areas, and have two adults in the home; have annual family income in $40,000 and more.

Suniya Luthar, professor of psychology and education, believes that young people of all social layers are more and more inclined to anxiety and depression. These data the author of the research received on the basis of the comparative analysis of anxiety and depression parameters of professors and students of the University. A high level and frequently met anxiety and depression at young generation were combined with low and an average level at mature people.
Suniya Luthar disagrees with some researchers who consider, that the problem of anxiety at teenagers and young people grows from parental education with tendencies to hyper wardship, when parents all the time aspire to protect children from failures. Here are other reasons, considers Luthar. Very much depends on a self-estimation and self-respect of the teenager and his or her desire to perfect himself.
The report of the researcher was published by the University of Kansas. During the monitoring it was revealed that the number of the students suffering from depression doubled for the 12 years (from 1989 till 2001). University of Michigan Depression Center has given the exact data - almost 15 % of all students suffer from depression.
